Sport at IT Carlow

Sport at IT Carlow

IT Carlow is renowned as a centre of sporting excellence and was recently voted, for the second consecutive year, the No. 1 institute of technology for sport in Ireland by Student Sport Ireland. This is a testament to our extensive and ongoing investment in the development of first-class sports facilities, our pioneering new courses and a sports scholarship programme that enables sports athletes to compete at the highest level while pursuing their education.

There are four key pillars of sport at IT Carlow that embrace all levels of ability and reflect our core belief that sport is not just about the pursuit of excellence, but is a valuable facilitator of friendship, inclusion and well-being. They are:

  • Performance Sport
  • Competitive Sport
  • Recreational Sport (Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing)
  • Community Sport

Performance Sport

The performance sport programme at IT Carlow is designed for students who wish to compete and succeed at the highest sporting level, while pursuing a course of academic study.

Sports Scholarship Programme

The sports scholarship programme offers a support package and bursaries to students of exceptional sporting ability.

They are two types of scholarship:

  • Elite Scholarships recognise the very best athletes competing at the very highest level in their chosen sport
  • Gold Scholarships are designed to nurture and develop individual talent and maintain the Institute’s sporting tradition

Please note the closing date for incoming first years students is 31st August 2021

High Performance Athlete Entry Scheme (HPE Scheme)

The HPE Scheme was established to enable high achievers, who are committed to their chosen sport, to achieve their dual ambition of a high-quality education and performance at the highest level within their field. IT Carlow offers up to 50 extra performance points for students who have achieved a minimum of 250 CAO Points in their Leaving Certificate or FETAC Level 5 award, and who meet the minimum course entry points.

Please note online applications will be open on the 1st of February 2021. Closing date for incoming first year students is 31st May 2021.

Competitive Sport

IT Carlow FitzGibbon Cup Finalists 2020

IT Carlow provides a comprehensive range of competitive sports clubs. A multi-million euro investment by the Institute in first-class facilities, married with the recruitment of some of the best sports coaches in Ireland, has ensured we are fast becoming the institute of choice for emerging talent. Our competitive sports include GAA, camogie, rugby, soccer and basketball, in both male and female categories.

The 2019/20 academic year was fantastic for IT Carlow sport. Our men’s soccer team won its eighth CFAI Challenge Cup title in ten years, while the footballers and hurlers both reached the finals of the Sigerson and FitzGibbon cups, respectively.

Recreational Sport

The recreational sports programme at IT Carlow provides opportunities for physical activity and friendship. A large percentage of the 40-plus sports clubs at IT Carlow provide activities for the recreational user. Informal activities, such as karting, zumba, pilates, hip hop, yoga and salsa are hugely popular, as are the special interest classes, such as airsoft, archery and rock climbing.

IT Carlow Health & Fitness Gym:
This facility is one of the best-equipped centres for strength and conditioning, fitness and sport in Ireland. The fitness suite at IT Carlow compromises a fitness gym, elite performance training centre, sports analysis laboratory, spinning room, activity room, changing facilities, showers, sauna and steam rooms. The gym is operated by fully qualified coaches. Annual student membership is just €60 per annum.

Community Sport

The IT Carlow sports department recognises the value of a vibrant community sports programme and has developed a number of key partnerships with local agencies.

They include: national governing bodies; local sports partnerships; local regional youth service; high performance sports teams; local clubs; primary and secondary schools; local, regional and national Special Olympics; county boards and other sporting organisations in the region.

Several IT Carlow students and graduates are now actively involved in community sport programmes with our various partners.
